Hello there, and welcome to your murder mystery. 

Before you begin your journey with Inspector Piper, there are some things you will need to know first. 

To solve your mystery, you will have to follow Pipers journey across Clitheroe to interview all the relevant suspects. 

At each location you will have to solve a clue in order to open up the information you need to solve the crime. 
 
The answer sheet to all the clues has been forwarded to you in your purchase email. However we recommend only looking at the sheet if you are well and truly stumped. All the answers can be found by keeping your eyes open and looking around. 

You will have to self navigate through Clitheroe in order to find you locations: so if Piper goes to the Castle, you will have to work your own way there in order to find your clue and work out your evidence. All the guidance points will be points of interest, and there is no time limit on completing your mission so if you wish to stop at any then feel absolutely free. The locations you choose to go to will be in a (relatively) ordered fashion....so as long as you don't go and chase a dead lead. 

At each page you will get some information from an individual or suspect; and we do recommend taking a pen and paper with you to make notes to help you on your quest. 

If you still are feeling stuck getting towards the end there are hints you can call on in order to give you a little extra nudge before you come up with your decision. These will be on the last three pages and you will have to click on the hint button to unlock. You can go back and forward in between pages (previous and next button) however do try not to close the page as you will have to restart from the beginning. 

Hints will be prompted when they are available - they are worth taking as they may provide you will some extra information that will lead you to solve this sneaky crime. 

When you make your final guess; that is the end of it. Once you press complete you will be taken through to the results page....and only then will you work out if you have the brain power of Holmes or the critical thinking of a gnat.

It is March 1911. Another day, another case for Piper. With deaths now sitting at three in just two days then time is of the essence.  He has been called to Clitheroe to help identify and dismantle a group of bootleggers, before they can cause any more deaths. Word on the street is that an illegal alcohol smuggling ring have begun to trade in the city, passing off as a reputable business. This alcohol is made with cheap ingredients and unsafely; causing serious harm or even death to those who ingest it. The hospital has reported 12 admissions over the last 3 days of suspected alcohol poisoning.

Cases have been known to have originated from a local pub, the market and even from a local church. There have been strange goings on at a local mill; with it recently having been purchased by an unnamed patron. A whiskey shop and local emporium have also been noted to be good lines of enquiry, and you have a least one witness wanting to talk to you to provide you with some more information.

You have two tasks; find out who is behind this evil scheme and also work out the storage location of the alcohol, so it can be destroyed before it causes any more harm.

Go forward now to have a discussion with the local detective and receive your list of suspects. To meet up with your detective you will have to head to Clitheroe Castle.

To start your journey head to Clitheroe Castle, at the entrance by Castle Gate.

To open your first clue and start your investigation, find the white stone at the bottom of the hill and write down what is written after witches. 

You meet with the local inspector.

“Hi Piper, thanks for coming to help us. We are hoping we can solve this quickly before any nastier surprises.

We are a bit stuck really. We have chased a few leads; and we know there is a product coming into the market, which is a knock off, but we have never been able to find the source. The Catholic Priest Father White has been extremely helpful as he feels he was sold some knock off wine which seems to have made some of his congregation poorly. We have a local “businessman” at the station for questioning as a large quantity of knock off alcohol was found on his site; however, he claims he knows nothing about it. I have also arranged a meeting with a local distiller, Samantha. She has claimed to know some information about who is behind it…. but she does have a bit of a chequered record with us.

I will give you a copy of our suspects list which should give you a head start. We believe there are a few involved but we really need to find the ringleader, as without them this racket with fall apart.

Your hunch tells you the market is a good place to start. Always start at the beginning of the trail a good copper once told you; and the alcohol always seems to pass through here. You head from the Castle to the Market on Station road; looking out from the Castle, turn left down Parson Lane. Can you find the directions now to work towards the market.…. Quickly, time is of the essence. Piper will meet you at the Market.

To progress forward with your investigation you will have to find a board with the history of Clitheroe on it by the market entrance. Here you will have to do a bit of a sum.

You wander into the market. All seems normal on the surface. With the hustle and bustle of the traders. You wander round to find the man you have been directed to. You find Matt Hall by his Market Stall. He eyes you up with suspicion as you approach, and you think he is about to dart. But he suddenly turns on the charm and greets you with a smile. You introduce yourself and ask him what he knows about the illegal alcohol coming into the town.

“Well officer, I wouldn’t know anything about that would I” he replies.
“However what I can tell you is there is an awful lot of things coming through this market, and not all of it is legal. But I count myself as an honest trader who only sells premium, quality produce”.

He refuses to say anymore, however you sense he is hiding something. Your officer in the field distracts Mr Hall and it allows you to search his stall thoroughly. You find dozens of bottles like this; however, it is too early to tell if this is what you are looking for.

After taking one of the bottles for evidence you think it wise to deposit it back at the police station. Whilst there you may as well drop in on the suspect who has been arrested. You are looking to leave the market onto Back King Street, and the find the Police Station on it. Head there to progress with your journey.

What colour is the light above the door to the station?

You safely deposit the alcohol and advise it gets tested to compare it to the smugglers brew.

You then head to the interview rooms, where Dave Attwal is currently being held. Dave looks panicked and scared as you enter. You ask him what he knows about the alcohol found on his site.

“Nothing…..absolutely nothing” He shouts. “I’ve told all the other officers this. I have very little to do with the day to day running of the place. That is mostly left to my manager”.

You ask him why his signature is on the receiving slips for the old wooden cabinets and wardrobes that the alcohol was found in.

“I don’t know, I sign a lot of things. Or it could have been anyone signing them. That’s it. I’m not saying anything else until I can have my lawyer present”.

You continue to pry and dig a little deeper however he makes “No comments” for the rest of the interview.

His signature on the deliveries matches up with his signature on admission to the police station.

He clearly isn’t in the mood for talking, so you head on to your next location.

You decide to head up to the Whisky shop, just a short walk up King Street, turning right as you look out from the Police Station.

Once outside can you find the date of the Victorian Buildings?

You peer into the shop. The lights are off, the windows covered with bars and the door is fully locked. However, as you peer inside you spot that it looks like it is still in working use. You wander round to the rear entrance, but the back door is also locked.

 You are told by a neighbour that the owner Chris Parsley shut up weeks ago, as he heard bootleggers were coming to the Town and could not compete with their prices. However, they do report quite a bit of activity still occurs within the shop; just not to the public. You hang around for a while but see no-one coming or going, so decide to head on. With one last look into the shop, you manage to catch a glimpse of some bottles of alcohol behind the barred windows.

Your next stop is a discreet meeting with your witness, Samantha Britain. She said to meet you at Clitheroe Library. You will need to meet Piper there, which in only one left turn away onto Market Place. Can you find it?

To progress on you will have to do some deciphering.

You meet up with Samantha, who has her face covered and is doing her best not to be seen. Samantha speaks quietly, and quickly. Barely finishing her sentence before she rushes off.

“Go to the pub. You will find the sewer rat behind all this business there”.

That’s it.

As she walks away you see she has scratched a code onto the wall…can you work out which pub she means?

You quickly work out where to go. The Rose and Crown Hotel on Castle Street…not far from where you started, on Castle Street. Meet piper there.

To continue with your investigation find out who meets there every Thursday at 12.30pm.

You are greeted by the Landlady, Beth Tracey. She eyes you up suspiciously and tells you the pub is closed. You inform her you are investigating the illegal alcohol being plied into the town.

“Good. I’m glad some one is. We don’t want the risk of seeing one of our patrons falling sick from drinking what we serve. We don’t have any idea who is behind it. We use lots of different suppliers as times are hard. Whoever offers the best price we tend to go with them, and we haven’t noticed any bad complaints recently with any changes we have made.”

You ask her if you can search the premises. She lets you look around.

You search diligently and find some unlabelled bottles of alcohol which you confiscate.

You inform her that a source told you to search her premises.

“Ahhhh did it now. I bet I know who it was. She will say anything to bring us down.”

You ask her if she has any information that could help you but she can’t think of any.

Alas, the trip to the pub was not as beneficial as you thought, however you next have an appointment with the local priest, Father White. Coming out from the pub you turn right, and when you reach Castle Gate you turn left, then quickly turning left again onto Strang Stee. You turn right onto Lowergate and can see the Church looming large in front of you.

How many large cylindrical windows are there above the main entrance to the Church?

You walk into the Church and sat in the pew at the front is Father White; deep in prayer. You cough loudly and he wakens.

“Hello, Inspector Piper I presume”. He clearly has been waiting  for you.

You ask him what he knows about the alcohol.

“Oh I am in such shame. I can’t believe members of my congregation have fallen ill due to drinks they have consumed on this premises. The supply of the alcohol is sadly not within my remit, however I do know recently we have changed supplier…although we have subsequently ceased all contact with them” he finishes with passion. He clearly is upset about this ordeal.

You ask if he has any information on who they used, He sadly cannot give you much information but does find a receipt for the delivery of the alcohol.

It was from a company called 'RA Limited'. You pocket the receipt.

You think you know a little more now, and your heart starts to race with nervous excitement. But you calm down, the next port of call is the Emporium, which is found further down Lowergate; turning left if you are facing away from the Church. You march quickly there.

The sign outside says “Closed” however you hear shouting from within. As you turn the door handle to enter a man storms angrily out. You recognise him as Mr Parsley from the whiskey shop. He does not stop to talk but marches away. You enter and a woman turns to look at you.
“What do you want” She snaps.

You explain who you are and that you are investigating the bootleggers.

She immediately apologises and explains she is going through a tough time with her personal life. You notice a tan line where her wedding ring use to live.  You ask her if you can look around.

You search the place. The emporium is filled with lamps, lights, and furniture. You search through the place with a fine tooth comb; looking into every piece of furniture, however nothing can be found.

You ask her if she has heard of anything relating to the smuggling of alcohol.

“Me, not at all. I just try and run my emporium and stay away with all other matters. Clitheroe is such a nice town I can’t believe someone would act in this way.”

You ask her where she gets her furniture from.

“All over really” She says proudly, “We source then from far and wide and pride ourselves on the robustness and quality of our pieces.”

You thank her for her time and move on to your final location.

The final pieces of the puzzle with hopefully come together at the great Holmes Mill. You head there to meet with the manager of the Mill.

What is the name of the brewery on the site?

Having met your team outside the mill you all rush in. Shouting “Police” the hub of mill activity falls quickly silent as your officers quickly take control of the premises. William Wool, the manager, is found and brought to you whilst the officers search the mill.

You ask him what he knows about the imported alcohol.

“Nothing.” He says defiantly but you sense he is lying. “You won’t find anything here” he adds confidently.

After a short while the mill has been searched. No alcohol has been found on the site.

You ask William where it is.

“Like I said. You won’t find anything here and I ain’t saying nothing. Now I demand my lawyer before you ask me anything else.”

Your officer brings you signed papers from today by the owner David Attwal of several shipping containers, however you know he has been in the station all day and could not have signed them.  The containers are now emptied but all contained large items. A receipt is found again from “RA”.
