Hello, and thank you for purchasing "Bownessie's Lost Eggs ". A few rules here to help you with your game.

1: DO NOT close the page that contains the game. This will log you out completely and you will be taken back to the start. You can move through the quest by pressing next and previous however do not close the page it is on. You can swap tabs and switch pages with no problems. 

2: You will have to solve a series of clues and puzzles to work through the game. Please note; there are hints you can ask for to give you a nudge what to do however if you are well and truly stuck the downloadable answer sheet with the correct answers was emailed to you on purchase. (Only look if you are in desperate need - no peeking). The answers may be drop down answers, multiple choice or require you to write in a word/letters or numbers. Just make sure to always check the spelling.

3. You can go forward and backwards in between pages so you can check on orientation and where you have been - use the previous and next buttons to go between pages

4. If you click on an image to open it, it will open in a new tab. When you are completed it and want to shut it down just make sure you do not close the original page. You could also just zoom in on the picture instead of opening it. 

5. You will also learn lots of interesting facts about Bowness as you progress through. Just make sure to tick the box after the fact to allow you to continue.

6: There is absolutely no time limit, so feel free to pop into any bars/pubs or shops that you want on your way around; sampling the delights that Bowness has to offer.

“One quiet evening late at night, Bownessie journeyed into town,

When all was hushed, and shops were shut, no-one was around,

She loved her trip, a peaceful walk to get out and stretch her legs,

But when she returned into the water she forget where she had put her eggs!”

Bownessie is upset.

She has lost her eggs somewhere here in Bowness. With only a matter of time until they get stolen by one of the birds, it is your challenge to find her eggs.

By following the clues you will hopefully be led to the correct spot to let Bownessie know where to go.

So good luck. And think fast.

To start your game you will need to go to Bowness Escape, 62 Quarry Rigg, La23 3DU and click start to begin your quest.

Right…..lets get started then. The time is ticking and the birds are getting ever closer. Follow the clues to find a series of numbers, letters or words; which will help you to work your way through the quest and solve the puzzles in time. 

Bownessie loves her boats. She definitely remembers taking  a lovely walk through these gardens, hiding behind the hedges as people came. To get started: find the garden based-boat sculpture. Once here, you will need to do some maths:

Times the number of propeller blades you can find, by the number of white birds you can spot. Then add on the number of anchor chains you can see before you.

Once you have done this...you will have your first number, which is two digits long; however you will need two more before you can open the next document.  Standing directly behind the rudder, look left and find a number underneath “the big screen”. This will be your third.

For your 4th number; take one away from the last number you found.

Did you know the name Lake Windermere name comes in two parts, “Winder” is a derivative of the Norse name Vinandr. While “mere” is an Old English Word for a body of water. There’s a lot to be said in a name, with previous spellings including “Wynhendermere” and “Winandermere”.

Well done team...you are one step closer to saving the eggs! Bownessie remembers before she came up here she walked up from the Lake.

So, head down the road into Bowness, passing on your right a festive shop, a delightful deli and a world full of rabbits.

When you reach a roundabout, do not cross over but turn right, onto Rayrigg Road, and you will come to a   “Albertiful” pub.

Look to the signage; and the distances to various locations.

Can you work out the distance Bownessie travelled on her last trip?

Bownessie walked the distance to Helvelyn twice and then cycled 5 times the distance to Scafell Pike. She then quickly galloped around Rydal Water another 5 times. What distance did she cover in total?

Did you know there is only one lake in the Lake District. Bassenthwaite Lake is the only body of water that uses the term lake, the others being meres, waters or tarns

Marvellous team, you are doing excellently.

Quickly now, follow Bownessie’s path and head down St. Martins parade. This is the road directly opposite the pub, crossing safely over the road and turning right before you meet the roundabout.
Take the road left and onto Church Street, following it up and round in front of the church.

Bownessie loved to hear the bells of the church as people get married, and would spend hours in a happy daze as they tolled their merry tunes. This is one of her favourite places in Bowness, so it would be worth making a note of the name of the church.

She remembers standing in front of the church and looking away from it… can you see the name of a tree in the distance? Remember the type of tree.  

Now turn around and face the church. How many large stained glass windows can you see facing you on this side of the church? 

This will give you your next code to open the next document: one word, then two numbers.

If you fancy attempting your own world record during your break in Windermere, you can always try stone skimming. The current holder is Alex Lewis who last time out broke the current record by an amazing 7 metres, making his stone skim 98m!)

Excellent team. You are getting nearer and nearer. Bownessie remembers the noise of the boat engines on the bay, so quickly turn right, and follow traffic down into the bay of Bowness.

Follow the path past the boats, keeping to the right hand side as the road diverts in two, however now cross the road, and follow the path in between the information centre and the public toilets.

Keep walking up the path, following it upwards and round; which will eventually provide you with a fantastic view across the bay.

You will also notice a band stand in the middle of the field; and head there.

Standing in the band stand; face outwards across the bay. From this location you will get three clues to put together to form a code.

Imagining a clock face, you are now looking out at 12 o clock.

1. A) At two o clock. Look into the distance and remember the name of the saint from the church spire you can see.
2. B) At ten o clock, carefully follow the path to the rocks you can see, and can you spot the difference and work out what has been added to the picture at the bottom of the page?
3. C) At five o clock, find the first letter of the tree that was specially planted in 1998

During 1895 Lake Windermere was frozen for 6 weeks, making it possible to walk from one side to the other. Although the great Lake has since become frozen a couple of times since (the last being 1963), the great freeze of 1895 was certainly the most memorable.

You are progressing on your quest, however the birds are more noticeable now and getting nosier...so you better hurry. You don’t want them getting too hungry!!

So now drop down to the road, and follow it left, heading away from the town centre with the water on your right hand side.

Keep walking until you reach a gate. You will have to follow the road straight on instead of following it when it starts to bend round to the left. Type in the name of the point you can see before you to continue.

Although this particular fact isn’t exclusive to Windermere, it is an important modern-day fact relating to all of the Lake District. In fact, it’s hard to believe that it was only as recent as 2017 that Cumbria’s Lake District was finally declared a World Heritage Site.

You look closer at the point and see a notice pinned to it. Bownessie has left you a riddle to solve....can you work it out? 

Oh you clever bunch. Well done.

Now quickly, turn around now, and head back along the path you came, keeping the road on the right hand side.

You will eventually find three podiums that look out onto the lake; Bownessie knows they are here somewhere!!!

Can you help her find the missing mound from the picture, and add to it the hidden year on the podium itself….

Whilst it is true that Windermere is the biggest body of water in England, it is a more interesting fact that it holds an incredible 300 billion litres of water. Formed around 13,000 years ago during the last Ice Age when two glaciers melted, the water in Windermere was retained by the rock material that the glaciers deposited, and the southern end of the lake is where the water drains into the River Leven.
